Where to Live in Nara as an International Student

By Sophie · 20 October 2026 · Updated 20 October 2026

Nara is compact, so most central locations work. The real choice is between the busy station areas and calmer residential pockets with easy access to the trains.

Daianji area. This is our pick for students who want quiet without being cut off. It is a calm, residential neighborhood with a local feel, and one of Nara’s historic temples, Daian-ji, is close by. JR Nara Station (East Gate) is about 23 minutes on foot by Google Maps estimate, or roughly 7 to 9 minutes by bike, so you get the quiet of a residential street and a short ride to the trains. Buses are also available when the weather is bad.

Near Kintetsu JR Nara Station. The most convenient base for sightseeing and the Kintetsu line to Osaka. It is livelier, with more restaurants and shops, and rent is usually higher.

Near JR Nara Station. Good for the Yamatoji Line toward Osaka and Kyoto. Practical, but more of a transit hub than a neighborhood.

Naramachi. A historic merchant district with small cafes and craft shops. Atmospheric, but with fewer everyday supermarkets.

Yamato-Saidaiji area. A hub where several Kintetsu lines meet, handy for reaching Kyoto. More residential and local.

What to check for any location:

  • Travel time to your campus
  • Whether the route to campus is bikeable
  • Distance to a supermarket and convenience store
  • How quiet the street is at night

Frequently asked questions

What is the best area to live in Nara for students?

For quiet study and a local feel, the Daianji area is a strong choice. For nightlife and sightseeing access, the Kintetsu Nara and JR Nara station areas are more convenient.

Is Daianji far from the center of Nara?

No. JR Nara Station is about 23 minutes on foot or 7 to 9 minutes by bike, and buses make the trip even easier on rainy days.

Do I need a bike if I live in the Daianji area?

A bike makes life easier, since the station is only 7 to 9 minutes away by bike. But the 23-minute walk is also very doable, so you can start without one.

Can I live in Nara and study in Osaka or Kyoto?

Yes. Kyoto Station is about 48 minutes and Osaka Station about 54 minutes from Nara by train. Add your bike or walking time to the station, and check first and last trains.
