How to Get Around Nara: Transport Guide for Students

By Sophie · 19 October 2026 · Updated 20 October 2026

Nara is easy to navigate. Most students use a mix of bike, bus, and train.

By bike. The best option from the Daianji area. JR Nara Station is about 7 to 9 minutes away by bike, and the terrain is flat. Buy a bike from a local shop or second-hand, register it, and lock it every time you park.

By foot. JR Nara Station is about 23 minutes on foot from the Daianji area, which is a pleasant walk in good weather. The immediate neighborhood is also nice for evening strolls, and Daian-ji temple is nearby.

By bus. Buses reach places the trains do not. Many accept IC cards. Check timetables, since some routes run less often in the evening.

By train. Two main networks serve the city: Kintetsu and JR. Kintetsu is the main route to Osaka, and JR connects to Kyoto and Osaka on the Yamatoji line. Use a route-planning app to compare time and price.

IC cards. A rechargeable IC card such as ICOCA or Suica works on most trains and buses and in many shops. Buy one at a station machine and add money as needed.

Taxis. Available but pricey for daily use. Useful for late nights or heavy luggage.

Money-saving tips:

  • Prefer the bike for short trips
  • Ask whether your university offers commuter pass discounts
  • Compare routes in an app before long trips
