Paperwork is the part of moving to Japan that worries people most. It is manageable once you know the order.

Your visa and your residence card. Your visa lets you enter Japan. If you are staying longer than three months, you are generally issued a residence card, which you carry at all times. It shows your status of residence, period of stay, and address.

Register your address. After you move into your housing, register your address at the city office. This is normally required within 14 days of moving in. Bring your passport and residence card. The address is then written on the back of your residence card.

Join national health insurance. Residents staying longer than three months are generally required to be in a public health insurance scheme. You can usually enroll at the city office at the same time as your address registration. Student premiums are typically modest.

Pension. Residents aged 20 and over are generally enrolled in the national pension system. Students can often apply for a payment deferral or exemption. Ask at the city office.

Open a bank account. Banks often ask for your residence card, passport, and proof of address. Some require a minimum period of residence or a Japanese phone number, so ask before you go.

Get a phone plan. A Japanese SIM or eSIM is easier once you have your residence card and address.

Keep your documents safe.

  • Carry your residence card at all times
  • Keep a copy of your passport and card in a separate place
  • Tell the city office and immigration about address changes within the required time

Renewals. Your period of stay is limited. Start the renewal process early, and check your school’s support for the application.

Using your coliving address. A coliving with a clear address and written agreement makes registration simpler.
