Things to Know Before Moving to Nara as an International Student

By Sophie · 20 October 2026 · Updated 20 October 2026

Nara is one of the easiest Japanese cities to settle into. It is small, safe, and calm, while Osaka and Kyoto are both within reach. Here is what to sort out before you land.

Housing is the biggest hurdle. Many Japanese landlords ask for a guarantor, key money, a deposit, and a lease of one to two years, which is hard for a newcomer. Furnished, flexible-term housing such as a coliving skips most of that.

Pick a quiet base that is still close to the station. Our coliving is in the Daianji area, a calm residential neighborhood. JR Nara Station (East Gate) is about 23 minutes on foot by Google Maps estimate, or roughly 7 to 9 minutes by bike, so you get quiet evenings without a long commute.

You will want a bicycle. Central Nara is flat and compact. A bike covers most daily errands and often the ride to campus. Register it at purchase, as Japan requires bike registration.

Trains connect you to the Kansai region. Kyoto Station is about 48 minutes and Osaka Station about 54 minutes from Nara by train. You can live somewhere quiet and still reach big-city nightlife, internships, and airports.

Set up the basics in your first two weeks:

  • Register your address at the city office (required for residents)
  • Enroll in national health insurance if your school does not cover you
  • Open a bank account and get a local SIM or eSIM
  • Get an IC card (ICOCA or Suica) for trains and buses

Expect a quieter pace. Many shops close early, and nightlife is limited compared with Osaka. Students who thrive in Nara like calm, nature, and a strong community.

Bring cash. Cards are accepted more widely each year, but small restaurants and shrines still prefer cash.
