Part-Time Jobs for International Students in Nara

By Sophie · 19 October 2026 · Updated 20 October 2026

*Note: Work rules for student visa holders are set by immigration authorities and can change. Confirm the current rules before you start any job.*

Many international students work part-time to help with living costs and to practice Japanese. Here is how it works.

You need permission first. Student visa holders generally need a permit called “permission to engage in an activity other than that permitted by the status of residence previously granted.” You apply for it through immigration, and it is sometimes available on arrival. Working without it can put your visa at risk.

Hour limits. Students are typically limited to 28 hours per week during the school term, with longer hours allowed during official long vacations. Check the current limit, since the rule counts all your jobs together.

Jobs that are not allowed. Work in adult entertainment and similar businesses is not permitted for student visa holders.

Common part-time jobs in Nara:

  • Restaurants and cafes
  • Convenience stores and supermarkets
  • Hotels and guesthouses, which are plentiful in a tourist city
  • English tutoring or conversation teaching
  • Tourism-related work, such as helping at shops and attractions

How to find a job.

  • Ask your university’s international or career office
  • Check job boards for part-time work
  • Look for help-wanted signs in shop windows
  • Ask housemates and friends for referrals

Language matters. Some jobs need conversational Japanese, while others, such as hotel and tourism roles, value English. A little Japanese expands your options a lot.

Be on time, be polite. Japanese workplaces value punctuality and clear communication. Ask questions early, and confirm your shift times and pay in writing.

Pay and taxes. Check your hourly pay against the local minimum wage. Understand whether taxes are withheld, and keep your pay records.

Commuting from the Daianji area. Many jobs in central Nara are within a short bike ride. JR Nara Station is about 7 to 9 minutes by bike, which keeps transport costs low.
