Nara in Winter: A Guide for International Students

By Sophie · 19 October 2026 · Updated 20 October 2026

Winter in Nara is cold but usually dry, with clear days and quiet streets. With a little preparation, it is one of the nicest times of year.

The weather. Expect cold mornings and evenings, with occasional frost and rare light snow. Daytime can be sunny and pleasant. Winter lasts roughly December to February.

Indoor heating is different. Many Japanese buildings, especially older ones, are not centrally heated. Rooms are often heated with individual air conditioners or space heaters, and hallways and bathrooms can be cold. Ask about heating when choosing housing.

How to stay warm:

  • Layers: thermal underwear, a sweater, and a warm coat
  • Slippers or thick socks indoors
  • A warm blanket or electric blanket for sleeping
  • Disposable heat packs (kairo), sold cheaply at convenience stores and pharmacies
  • Hot drinks and soups, which are easy to find and affordable

Electricity costs. Heating raises your bills. If utilities are included in your coliving rent, check whether there is a fair-use limit.

Festivals and events.

  • Wakakusa Yamayaki: the hillside burning, held in January
  • Kasuga Taisha lantern festival: held in early February, with thousands of lit lanterns
  • New Year shrine visits (hatsumode), a traditional way to start the year

Dates change each year, so check official calendars.

Things to do in winter. Clear air makes Nara Park and the hills beautiful for walks. Cozy cafes and hot meals are a good excuse to go out. Day trips to Kyoto are less crowded than in the peak seasons.

Winter in the Daianji area. The neighborhood is quiet and calm in winter, with clear skies and little traffic. JR Nara Station is roughly a 7 to 9 minute bike ride away.

Health tips.

  • Wash hands and carry a mask in crowded places
  • Stay hydrated, since heated rooms can be dry
  • Check how health insurance works if you need a clinic visit
