Exploring Kansai

Best Day Trips from Nara for International Students

By Sophie · 20 October 2026 · Updated 20 October 2026

Nara is calm, but much of Kansai is a short trip away.

Getting to the trains from the Daianji area. JR Nara Station is about 23 minutes on foot or 7 to 9 minutes by bike, so day trips start quickly. Ride to the station, park your bike, and be on a train to Kyoto or Osaka within minutes. Buses are an option for rainy days or heavy luggage.

Kyoto (about 48 minutes to Kyoto Station). Temples, shrines, and gardens. Fushimi Inari is especially convenient by train.

Osaka (about 54 minutes to Osaka Station). Food, nightlife, shopping, and big events.

Kobe (about 1.5 hours). A port city with views, cafes, and a relaxed international feel.

Himeji (about 2 hours). Home to Himeji Castle, one of Japan’s best-preserved castles.

Asuka and Horyuji (nearby). Ancient temples and a slower, quieter day.

Yoshino (further south). Famous for cherry blossoms in spring. Check transport first, as trains are less frequent.

Koyasan (about 2 to 3 hours). A mountain temple complex with an overnight temple stay option. Plan ahead if you want to stay.

Planning tips:

  • Check the last train home before you go
  • Get an IC card for quick train payments
  • Go early to beat crowds at popular places
  • Ask your housemates for their favorite spots
